Master of Science in Computer Science

The Master's programs in computer science at the University of Neuchâtel are part of the Swiss Joint Master of Science in Computer Science, a program offered jointly by the universities of Bern, Neuchâtel, and Fribourg.

Overview

Building on its successes, computer science faces new challenges related, for example, to the management and intelligent processing of enormous volumes of information, data protection and privacy requirements, the need for a greater understanding of natural language, and the development of effective, secure, reliable, and scalable socio-technical systems.

Courses are taught mainly in English and, to a lesser extent, in French or German. The program is organized in such a way that students can enter either in the fall or spring semester.

Aims

This degree is unique in Switzerland and is part of the BeNeFri program (Universities of Bern, Neuchâtel, and Fribourg). The programme combines theoretical knowledge from the academic field with practical expertise from the economic and social fabric. Firmly anchored on three pillars - information, networks, and architecture - it allows students to develop complementary skills through elective courses in related fields.

Structure

The programme consists of lectures with assignments, seminars, internships or other forms of teaching, and a masters thesis. It comprises 90 ECTS credits, consisting of 60 ECTS credits of teaching units and 30 ECTS credits of an individual masters thesis.

Teaching units are grouped into 6 tracks reflecting different profiles in computer science. In order to ensure sufficient diversification, students choose teaching units from at least 3 different tracks. Students who want to specialize in a particular track complete at least 5 units from that track and write their masters thesis on a topic related to the chosen track.

More info about the programme and the content of the tracks and units can be found on the master's website:

Perspectives professionnelles

The degree enables students to take up positions of responsibility in a wide range of economic sectors, including finance, high-tech companies, journalism and entertainment, administration, education and continuing education, research, robotics, gaming and sports, communication technology, engineering, and knowledge management. Graduates of this programme enjoy excellent career prospects, as IT specialists are in high demand worldwide.
