Is the Canadian North Hot Enough? Geothermal Energy from the Ground for People Living on the Territory

Jasmin Raymond, Senior Researcher at Institut national de la recherche scientifique, Québec (Canada)

This seminar is part of the Tuesday Seminar Series organized by the Center for Hydrogeology and Geothermics (CHYN) at the University of Neuchâtel. We are pleased to welcome Prof. Jasmin Raymond from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique in Québec (Canada), who will discuss the potential of geothermal resources and technologies to support a clean energy transition in Canada’s North.

Abstract
The sustainable development of Canada’s North is increasingly urgent, especially given growing concerns about security and sovereignty over the Arctic. Nearly 100 communities, mostly Indigenous, live in a diesel-dependent dynamic, where initiatives to deploy clean technologies relying on local resources could help reclaim and decolonize northern energy systems. Drawing on research from the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Nunavik, this presentation will examine if geothermal resources and technologies can foster this transition.
