This course is aimed at students who need a TOEFL qualification to continue their studies in an English-speaking country. The TOEFL examination is accepted by a large number of institutions in a variety of countries including the United States, Canada and Australia. There are no special entry requirements. The course is aimed at students whose proficiency level is around B1.

The course will allow students :

  • to familiarize themselves with the format of the TOEFL iBT test
  • to analyse and summarize academic texts (lectures, essays), as well as infer facts and understand the writer’s position.
  • to analyse the information contained in university-level talks, lectures and presentations, as well as campus conversations.
  • when speaking in an academic setting: to describe a personal experience or express a point of view; to participate actively in academic or casual discussions with teachers or other students; to synthesize and summarize written information.
  • when writing in an academic setting: to synthesize and summarize important information; to express and defend a point of view.

Flexi-course: the course is divided into 90-minute lessons taught over five weeks. The students are required to do 8 hours of self-study at the Espace Multimédia d’Auto-apprentissage (E.M.A.).

To obtain a course certificate, students should :

  1. attend classes regularly (at least 80%);
  2. get at least 40 points in the reading and listening section of the TOEFL test;
  3. hand in an oral file and one text.

​The course material will be distributed in class. Students are required to contribute
CHF 5.- towards the cost of printing and photocopying.
