Establishing yourself as a researcher

In the academic world, the doctoral period is considered as a transition stage, an initiation phase even, between studies and independent research activities.

Doctoral candidates are not looked upon as students, but it is thought that they must continue to improve their professional expertise and gain more independence before being recognised as senior researchers and considered as "peers".

They must also learn the ways of doing and being of the academic world.
