Saskia Bindschedler and Pilar Junier received the Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching 2021 for their educational initiative entitled "Microbes Go to School".

Award ceremony

This teaching initiative is based on service-learning and consists of a Science popularization course proposed to 3rd year BSc students in biology. The objective for them is to highlight, to school pupils from 3rd to 8th grade, the biodiversity of microbes and to compare their negative side (diseases) to the multitude of positive actions they can offer to society, in food or agriculture, for example. From a global point of view, this initiative also seeks to encourage the opening of the academic world to the school world.

After initial support from Unine (innovative educational projects) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (FNS) via the Agora program, the project must now find financial resources to sustain its activities. In addition to seeking sponsors, the team has launched a crowdfunding campaign on the wemakeit platform.
