The Migration-Mobility Survey (MMS) was one of the flagship research infrastructures developed by the nccr – on the move. Conducted every two years between 2016 and 2024, the survey provides detailed longitudinal evidence on the experiences and living conditions of foreign nationals in Switzerland.
Across five survey waves — 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024 — thousands of participants shared their experiences of migration and life in Switzerland. The survey covers topics including migration trajectories, employment, family configurations, social relationships, links with countries of origin and living conditions in Switzerland. The 2020 and 2022 waves also included specific questions on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The historical Migration-Mobility Survey website brings together information about the survey, access to research data, interactive visualisations and selected findings from the different survey waves.
Many of the survey results are available in English, French and German, making the findings accessible to research, policy and wider public audiences across Switzerland.

Beyond the Migration-Mobility Survey, the nccr – on the move produced and documented an extensive body of research data across its twelve years. The NCCR progressively developed an open-science infrastructure for documenting, preserving and making research data reusable through established research repositories.
The nccr – on the move’s datasets and related infrastructures form part of its long-term scientific legacy, with resources preserved through repositories and continued data infrastructures beyond the end of the NCCR.
