The Master of Science in Applied Economics is one of the first economics programmes in Switzerland focusing on economic methods directly applied to real-world problems. With its specializations in Energy and Environmental Policy and Data Science, students acquire skills in two of the most exciting and relevant domains in economics.
Economists use theoretical models and empirical methods to understand, predict, and evaluate economic decisions and policies. The programme teaches how to use these methods to shed light on a wide range of relevant issues. For example, students approach questions such as: How can society tackle climate change? What are the costs and benefits of globalization? How can policy makers predict economic crises? What are the causes of economic inequality?
The programme has a strong data-driven approach using state-of-the-art statistical software and programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Stata). In addition, it teaches students critical thinking and an analytical approach to problem solving. Due to small classes, the methods are taught in a personal and interactive environment. Our academic professors and external lecturers from renowned policy institutions ensure that the emphasis stays on applying the methods to real-world problems, rather than technical details.
We offer pre-programmes designed to fill specific knowledge gaps. This allows students with a background in other social and quantitative sciences (e.g. political science, international relations, finance, engineering) and Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences (HES/HEG/FH) to join the Master. In addition, the study plan offers vast flexibility to accommodate family and work obligations.
David Zahnd (Portfolio and fund manager at Banque Bonhôte, winner of the Prix Henri Grandjean 2021) « In my job I scrutinize investment funds to make sure that they are of highest quality and in line with the bank’s sustainable investment strategy. I use the analytical, economic, and statistical tools I learned in the Master in Applied Economics daily. »

Rebecca Stalder (Intern at TEP Energy) « The specialization in Energy and Environmental Policy helped quickly finding an internship, in which I work on a survey on the CO2 emissions of the buildings in the Swiss cantons. Besides the specialization, I liked the small classes, interaction with the teachers, and group projects. » |
