Master of Science in Applied Economics

The Master of Science in Applied Economics is one of the first economics programmes in Switzerland focusing on economic methods that are directly applied to real-world problems. With its specialisations in Sustainability and Data Science, students acquire skills in two of the most exciting and relevant domains in economics.

Economists use theoretical models and empirical methods to understand, predict, and evaluate economic decisions and policies. The programme teaches how to use these methods to shed light on a wide range of relevant issues. For example, students approach questions such as: How can society tackle climate change? What are the costs and benefits of globalization? How can policymakers predict economic crises? What are the causes of economic inequality?

The programme has a strong data-driven approach using state-of-the-art statistical software and programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Stata). In addition, it teaches students critical thinking and an analytical approach to problem-solving. Due to small classes, the methods are taught in a personalized and interactive environment. Our academic professors and external lecturers from renowned policy institutions ensure that the emphasis remains on applying the methods to real-world problems, rather than on technical details.

We offer preparatory programmes designed to fill specific knowledge gaps. Therefore, students with a background in other social and quantitative sciences, e.g. political science, international relations, finance, engineering, and Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences (HES/HEG/FH), can join the programme. In addition, the study plan offers considerable flexibility to accommodate family and work obligations.

Update Study Plan 2025/2026

The study plan will improve in various ways. The most important changes are:

  • The Master’s thesis amounts to 18 ECTS instead of 30 ECTS. Therefore, students can choose among a wider range of courses.
  • Improved specialisations in Sustainability and Data Science help students reinforce their knowledge and signal their expertise to future employers.
  • New courses in empirical labor economics, globalization and trade policy, economic research and AI, macroeconomic policy, programming (Python), sustainable finance, and reinforcement learning strengthen the programme in line with its focus on data-driven research relevant for decision-making.

In a 2024 survey of recent alumni we find that:

  • 91% found a job in 3 months or less
  • They work in the private sector (36%), public sector (32%), and at International Organisations, NGOs or in Academia (32%)
  • 88% state that the programme prepared them well for their current jobs and 100% state that it lived up to their expectations

David Zahnd (Portfolio and fund manager at Banque Bonhôte, winner of the Prix Henri Grandjean 2021)

« In my job I scrutinize investment funds to make sure that they are of highest quality and in line with the bank’s sustainable investment strategy. I use the analytical, economic, and statistical tools I learned in the Master in Applied Economics daily. »

Rebecca Stalder (Intern at TEP Energy)

« The specialization in Energy and Environmental Policy helped quickly finding an internship, in which I work on a survey on the CO2 emissions of the buildings in the Swiss cantons. Besides the specialization, I liked the small classes, interaction with the teachers, and group projects. »
