Nicole A. Mathys is an adjunct professor at the Institute for Economic Research at the University of Neuchâtel. She teaches a master's course in environmental economics. Her research focuses on the links between the environment and economic activities.
Nicole A. Mathys holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Neuchâtel (incl. an Erasmus exchange year at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK). She obtained her PhD in economics in 2007 from the University of Lausanne with a thesis entitled “Five Essays in Trade and the Environment and Economic Geography” and then worked on projects at the WTO and EPF Lausanne.
Between 2008 and 2013, she worked for the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), where she was responsible for the “Energy-Economy-Society” research program and contributed to the new Energy Strategy 2050. She also served as deputy head of the Market Regulation Section.
From 2013 and 2025, she headed the Fundamental Policy Questions Section at the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE). The section is responsible for statistics and analyses on spatial development and mobility. It also serves as the center of expertise for economic analyses and is responsible for coordinating innovation, research, and evaluations within the office.
At the end of 2025, she took over as Head of the Energy Secretariat at the Federal Office for National Economic Supply (FONES). This involves working with experts from the private sector, associations, and other relevant offices. The department is made up of five divisions: electricity, petroleum products, natural gas, wood energy, and drinking water.
