Course description

This course is intended for Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral students (in particular those who are starting to produce written work in English). The course will cover a variety of topics including the characteristics of academic writing, online tools (MT, AI etc.) for writing practice, plagiarism, paraphrasing and the structure of an academic paper.

Course workload
The course involves a minimum of 25 hours of in-class instruction and around 50 hours of independent study. It is equivalent to 3 ECTS credits, which may be recognised by certain study programmes or faculties.

This course is aimed at Bachelor’s, Master’s as well as doctoral students who need to produce written work in English.

There are no special entry requirements except for the students’ level of English, which must be at least B2.

You will be asked to come to the EMA before the beginning of the semester to take a Placement Test.

The course will allow students to:

  • familiarise themselves with the format of different types of academic texts
  • recognize the main features of academic style
  • use some of the online tools (MT, AI etc.) available for writing practice
  • discuss practical issues related to plagiarism, paraphrasing and citation conventions
  • practise summarizing existing research
  • produce a set number of written assignments

The eleven sessions will cover a variety of topics including the characteristics of academic writing, online tools (MT, AI etc.) for writing practice, plagiarism, paraphrasing and the structure of an academic paper. Depending on the type of practice, students will be required to work individually, in pairs or to take part in whole-class activities.

To receive a course certificate, students are expected to:

  • attend regularly (no more than three absences per semester)
  • submit a maximum of four written assignments for assessment

The material is provided in the form of photocopied handouts. A fee of CHF 10.00 is requested for photocopying costs.
