Thesis and children

Doctoral students who are about to become parents or have dependents have certain rights if they are contracted to a university.

Equal opportunities offices provide information on maternity, parental or paternity leave and maternity rights.

Every institution generally has a day nursery, although places are still in short supply and in great demand and you have to book well in advance. There are other offers, as well as the possibility of subsidies for families with modest incomes, on which equal opportunities offices at universities can provide information.

Childcare within the institutions

In Lausanne, EPFL and the UNIL have two day nurseries and a nursery school operated on a joint basis. The University also published an information brochure for parents (in French).

In Geneva, the EVE facilities (in French) for the university sector are childcare centres based on three sites, managed by an association.

At the University of Fribourg, the day nursery (in French or German) caters for children of from four months to nursery school age. There are 40 places available on a daily basis. The University also published an information brochure for parents (in French).

At the University of Neuchâtel, the Crèche Vanille-Fraise (in French) is a childcare centre for babies and children of up to five years of age.

The HES-SO has its Perollino nursery in Fribourg.
