Cognitive science covers a wide range of scientific subjects—such as neuroscience, artificial intelligence, philosophy, linguistics, ethnology, psychology and anthropology. Enriched by this interdisciplinarity, it studies the nature and processing of the human mind applying a naturalistic approach.

Thus cognitive science considers that characteristic human phenomena like semantics, persuasion within discourse, social behavior, collective passions, or even the spreading of ideas and beliefs throughout human societies, depend on fundamental principles that operate on human brain processing.

At the University of Neuchâtel Cognitive Science Center, the research interests therefore encompass two main axes: 1. Cognition, Society, Culture 2. Language, Meaning, Cognition. As part of the Faculty of Humanities, the Cognitive Science Center proposes study programs for the Institute of Language and Communication Sciences, to which it belongs.

The first research group's studies focus on the processes underlying the spreading of beliefs. While it is concerned with the various factors influencing trust in our interlocutor's narratives, it also tries to work out the metacognitive mechanisms regulating our own mental representations.

Studies of these phenomena, whether experimental or ethnographic, are carried out with particular attention to children's social and cognitive development, which play a fundamental role.

The second research group concentrates on semantics and Cognitive Pragmatics Theory, which allows analysis of specific linguistic facts (expressions of time and modality, thought and reported discourse, irony etc.) but also unveils discursive facts, e.g. the link between discursive persuasion mechanisms and cognitive architecture.

The Cognitive Science Center was launched and was co-founded in January 2011 by Professors Fabrice Clément and Louis de Saussure, its current directors. The Center benefits from a large network of interdisciplinary collaborations, within the University of Neuchâtel, as well as in Switzerland and abroad.
