I am a PhD candidate affiliated with the SNSF Eccellenza Project “Pragmatics meets epistemic vigilance: Explaining the development of irony comprehension” under supervision of prof. Diana Mazzarella.

My current research focuses on the study of the interplay between pragmatics and epistemic vigilance (i.e., a suite of cognitive mechanisms that protect individuals from being accidentally or intentionally misinformed) with the aim to provide further insights into the developmental puzzle of irony comprehension. The aim of the project is to test the hypothesis that irony comprehension relies on second-order epistemic vigilance abilities (Mazzarella&Pouscoulous, 2020). More precisely, we seek to determine whether this second-order epistemic vigilance facilitates irony comprehension in children and whether there exists a correlation between the development of irony comprehension and the emergence of second- order epistemic vigilance.

We address these issues combining theoretical methods from linguistics with the empirical methods from experimental pragmatics and developmental psychology.
