Sam Chen

Sam Chen is a postdoctoral researcher in Strategic Management at the Institute of Management of the University of Neuchâtel. He holds a PhD in Management Studies from the University of Exeter Business School, where his doctoral research examined how the structure of organizational networks shapes firm innovation. He also holds Master’s degrees from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Exeter, and a Bachelor’s degree from the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics.

His research lies at the intersection of strategy, innovation, and social networks. He studies how network structures influence the coordination, specialization, and recombination of knowledge within and across organizations. His current work examines inventor networks, interorganizational alliance networks, and innovation ecosystems, with a particular interest in how network community structure shapes technological search and innovation outcomes.

Methodologically, Sam works primarily with large scale longitudinal and relational data, including patent, inventor, alliance, and firm level datasets. His research combines social network analysis with econometric methods and computational approaches to measuring technological knowledge and organizational relationships.

At the Institute of Management, Sam works with Professor Claudia Jonczyk Sédès on research in strategic management and organizational networks. He is also involved in the teaching a series of related strategic management courses.
