Academic Writing with AI

Module overview

In this module, students learn how to write more effectively in academic English while exploring how AI tools can support (and sometimes limit) the writing process. Preparation takes place online with Moodle materials and AI practice, while classroom time is dedicated to discussion, feedback, and practical writing activities. The workload includes 8 hours of in-class instruction and about 25 hours of independent study, and assessment combines coursework with short writing assignments using and not using AI.

Module workload

This course involves six hours of in-class instruction and around 25 hours of guided independent study. When students take it alongside other modules, they can obtain the equivalent of 3 ECTS credits in Academic English, which may be recognized by certain study programmes or faculties.

Teacher
Sara Cotelli Kureth

Undergraduate and graduate students with an intermediate to advanced level of English (B2-C1). This course is intended for students whose curriculum is partly or entirely in English and have to submit reports, essays and other documents in English.

There are no specific entry requirements other than the student’s level of English. The module is intended for students with a proficiency level of at least low B2 (intermediate/upper-intermediate).

Before the start of the module, students will be required to take a placement test at the EMA.

The module will allow students to

  • recognise and apply key features of academic English, including formal register, hedging, coherence and cohesion, information structure in English;
  • understand the functions, limits, and safe uses of AI tools in academic writing;
  • gain hands-on practice with several AI tools and learn how to write better prompts for academic writing tasks.

The module follows an inverted classroom approach. Students will prepare by working through online materials on Moodle and exploring selected AI tools before each session. Classroom time will then focus on interactive discussions, explanations of key concepts, and practical language activities.

To receive a certificate for the module, students are expected to:

  • attend all four sessions;
  • do the required coursework;
  • write a short commented text with AI, write a short text without AI, provide a prompting journal.

Module materials will be distributed in class and made available on the Moodle module page.
