Module overview

This module provides a focused review of tenses and aspects in academic writing and speaking. Through practice, feedback, and collaborative tasks, participants strengthen their understanding of verb phrases and gain confidence in academic communication. The workload includes 4 classroom hours plus 12 hours of independent study. Assessment is based on full attendance and a short test.

Module workload

This module consists in three hours of in-class instruction and around 12 hours of independent study. When students take it alongside other modules, they can obtain the equivalent of 3 ECTS credits in Academic English, which may be recognized by certain study programmes or faculties.

Undergraduate and graduate students with an intermediate to advanced level of English (B2-C1). This module is intended for students whose curriculum is partly or entirely in English, as well as for doctoral students.

There are no special entry requirements other than the students’ level of. The module is intended for students with a proficiency level of at least B2 (upper-intermediate).

Before the start of the module, students will be required to take a placement test at the EMA.

The module will allow students to:

  • understand the information encapsulated in the English verb phrase, with an emphasis on tense and aspect;
  • understand the structure of, and produce accurate, complex verb phrases;
  • develop their ease and confidence in using English tenses.

Grammar tenses will be learnt in context, using an approach based on observation, systematization and practice. Students will be required to work individually, in pairs or participate in whole class activities.

Attendance and test. To pass the module, you must :

  • attend the two meetings scheduled
  • pass the test on 13 October 2025, 2.14-2.35pm Room D69 (EMA).
