Academic Grammar and Vocabulary

Course description

This semester course allows advanced students to work on their oral skills in an academic context. Pronunciation practice covers sounds, word and sentence stress. Other topics are silent letters, minimal pairs, homophones and homographs. Students are required to participate in class actively, give a short presentation and provide an oral recording at the end of the semester.

Course workload
The course involves a minimum of 25 hours of in-class instruction and around 50 hours of independent study. It is equivalent to 3 ECTS credits, which may be recognised by certain study programmes or faculties.

Bachelor’s students who want to prepare for courses in English. Master’s students who do not have a good command of English. PhD students who need to write in English and have to brush up their grammar. This course prepares participants to use English in an academic environment.

There are no special entry requirements except for the students’ level of English. The course is aimed at students whose proficiency level is at least B2+ (upper-intermediate).

You will be asked to come to the EMA before the beginning of the semester to take a Placement Test.

At the end of the intensive course, students will be able to:

  • use several tools to expand their academic vocabulary
  • be aware of key concepts to structure their vocabulary acquisition
  • use confidently complex grammatical structures to write complex sentences

Each session presents tasks and exercises focusing on vocabulary or grammar but allowing students to practice the four skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening).

To receive a course certificate, students are expected to:

  • attend regularly (no more than three absences per semester)
  • do the required homework
  • pass the end-of-semester test

The course material will be distributed in class. Students will be required to contribute CHF 10.- towards the cost of photocopying.
