Timothy Koschmann

Timothy Koschmann is a Professor of Medical Education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Early in his career, working in the area of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), Koschmann studied the relationship between technology, collaboration, and learning. This quite naturally led to inquiries into the nature of collaboration itself and, from there, to even more basic investigations into how understanding is monitored, displayed, and negotiated within interaction. Koschmann does fieldwork in a variety of settings related to the professional training of physicians and surgeons. He utilizes digital recordings and various collected exhibits as aids in fixing events of interest for later reconstruction and analysis. His analytic approach is ethnomethodologically-informed and draws frequently upon findings from the literature of Conversation Analysis.
