NEW Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC)

Supporting Your PhD Journey at UniNE

What is a TAC?

The Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) is a supervision tool for all DSLS PhD candidates at the institute of biology at UniNE, designed to provide constructive feedback, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of the thesis.

TAC meetings are supportive and stress-free, offering mentorship rather than formal evaluation. Each committee includes the thesis supervisor, one internal advisor from UniNE, and one external advisor from another institution, ensuring independence.

All TAC meetings are held online and scheduled at key milestones:

  • 1st meeting: within 4–6 months of PhD start
  • 2nd meeting: around 18 months
  • 3rd meeting: around 30 months
  • Optional 4th meeting: around 42 months

The procedure, in a nutshell

To help you navigate the TAC process, the following three steps summarize what you need to do from start to finish.

  1. Completing the TAC Registration Form
Once the candidate started the PhD, the candidate discusses and completes the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) registration form together with the thesis supervosir and co-supervisor (if applicable).
  2. Organizing and Conducting the TAC Meeting
Once the PhD has started, the PhD candidate is responsible for organizing the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting. This includes coordinating with committee members, following up on email exchanges, and communicating the agreed date to the doctoral school. During the meeting, the candidate presents an overview of the project or recent progress (see guidelines), while the committee provides constructive feedback and recommendations. If needed, private discussions can be arranged using breakout rooms.
  3. After the TAC Meeting
Following the meeting, the TAC and the PhD candidate complete the TAC report, which includes the committee’s recommendations and feedback as well as the candidate’s summary of the meeting. The PhD candidate then sends the completed report to the DSLS academic coordinator (ds.biology@unine.ch).
