Introduction to Academic Writing

Module overview

This six-session module provides an introduction to the main aspects of academic writing in English. Students will explore key features of academic style, including formal register, text coherence and cohesion, reporting and hedging. The course is also designed to develop students’ awareness of audience, purpose, and disciplinary expectations. Through guided practice and analysis of academic texts, participants will develop the skills needed to produce clear, coherent, and well-structured written assignments.

Module workload

The module consists in 9 hours of in-class instruction and around 20 hours of independent study. When students take it alongside other modules, they can obtain the equivalent of 3 ECTS credits in Academic English, which may be recognized by certain study programmes or faculties.

Undergraduate and graduate students with an intermediate to advanced level of English (B1+-C1) who need to produce written assignments or other forms of academic work (such as dissertations and theses) in English.

There are no specific entry requirements other than the student’s level of English. The module is intended for students with a proficiency level of at least low B2 (intermediate/upper-intermediate).

You will be asked to come to the EMA before the beginning of the semester to take a “Placement Test“.

The module will enable students to:

  • familiarise themselves with key aspects of academic writing in English
  • gain a better understanding of the mechanics of academic writing through guided writing practice
  • develop their awareness of academic conventions such as hedging

The module is divided into six sessions covering the following topics:

  • The main features of academic writing
  • Levels of usage/formality
  • The mechanics of writing
  • Text coherence and cohesion
  • Reporting in academic contexts
  • Hedging

To receive a certificate for the module, students are expected to:

  • attend all six sessions;
  • do all required coursework;
  • submit three written assignments.

Module materials will be distributed in class and made available on the Moodle module page.
