AI and Doctoral Research

Using AI in Doctoral research

Using artificial intelligence tools in thesis work must uphold the principles of scientific integrity.

Generative AI is reshaping the way we learn and conduct research, offering powerful tools to support academic work and facilitiate writing tasks. When used appropriately, it can become a valuable ally to save time and enrich critical thinking.

However, a doctoral thesis remains above all an original contribution that reflects the intellectual creativity, critical thinking, and scientific autonomy of the doctoral candidate. AI tools cannot replace personal reflection, intellectual effort, or the responsibility inherent in the production of rigorous academic work.

PORTE : the principles that guide responsible research

  • Prudence: AI does not replace judgment, critical thinking, analysis, or the researcher’s creativity.
  • Originality: The thesis must provide a new contribution that is genuinely the doctoral candidate’s own.
  • Responsibility: The doctoral candidate remains fully responsible for the content and quality of the final work.
  • Transparency: Any use of AI must be clearly disclosed and documented.
  • Ethics: Respect for authors’ rights, intellectual property, data, and sources; prevention of plagiarism and bias.
