English Pronunciation Module

Module overview

This 4-session module helps students improve their clarity and confidence in spoken English. It covers key aspects of pronunciation, including the sounds of English, word stress, variable pronunciation and connected speech. The module is practical and interactive, giving students tools to continue improving their pronunciation beyond the classroom.

Module workload
The module consists in six hours of in-class instruction and around 12 hours of independent study. When students take it alongside other modules, they can obtain the equivalent of 3 ECTS credits in Academic English, which may be recognized by certain study programmes or faculties.

C1). This module is intended for students whose curriculum is partly or entirely in English, as well as for doctoral students who need to communicate their work clearly.

There are no specific entry requirements other than the student’s level of English. The module is intended for students with a proficiency level of at least B1/B1+ (lower intermediate/intermediate).

Before the start of the module, students will be required to take a placement test at the EMA.

The module will enable students to:

  • familiarise themselves with the English sound system;
  • use word and sentence stress appropriately;
  • recognise common pronunciation challenges;
  • develop clarity and confidence in oral communication.

The module is structured into four sessions covering :

  1. The English sound system;
  2. Minimal pairs and variable pronunciation;
  3. Word/sentence stress and connected speech;
  4. Typical areas of difficulty including silent letters and word endings.

To receive a certificate for the module, students are expected to:

  • attend all four sessions;
  • do the required coursework;
  • complete one pre-course assignment (recording) and one final assignment (recording and meta-analysis).
