Emilie Chanclud

My research is mainly focused on plant pathogens adaptation to host resistance in the agro-ecosystem. To date, to constrain pathogens dispersion deploying resistant crop varieties (carrying the so-called resistance genes) is the major alternative to chemicals. However, the agro-ecosystem is highly conducive for virulent pathogens which easily overcome resistance. Plant resistance mainly relies on intracellular receptors recognizing a specific pathogen feature and inducing immunity. Although very efficient, pathogens evolve quickly to lose or mutate the cognate recognized feature that allows them to easily regain virulence on the previously resistant host. The evolutionary mechanisms behind this adaptation remain largely elusive and a better understanding is crucial to design future sustainable disease control strategies. My project aims to identify the genetic basis of adaptive evolution of pathogenic fungi in agricultural ecosystems by studying the adaptation of the pandemic pathogen, Zymoseptoria tritici, to wheat resistant varieties.
