The conference is organised by the Special Interest Groups SIG 10 and SIG 21 of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI).

Theme

The aim of the meeting is to provide a forum for the exchange of research findings and new ideas on the theme of Patchwork. Learning diversities. Continuing the reflection started in Utrecht 2010, at the Moving through cultures of learning meeting, focus of this meeting is to examine the dynamics by which practices of learning and institutions evolve, as learners, knowledge and educators move through different social spaces, meet and interact, as while drawing with them their languages, values and cultural references.

This theme provides ample space for discussion both for the separate SIGs – social interaction in learning and instruction as well as cultural diversity - and for the SIGs jointly. In addition, special attention will be given to the educational realities and challenges in Serbia today.

    Keynote speakers

    Ed Elbers, University of Utrecht

    is professor of communication, cognition and culture at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. During the EARLI conference in Budapest in 2007, he and Guida de Abreu founded SIG 21 on Learning and Teaching in Culturally Diverse Settings. Ed Elbers published on interaction in teaching/learning situations, both teacher-pupil interaction and peer interaction. A main research interest of his is cultural and lingustic diversity in schools. He was one of the editors of The Transformation of Learning. Advances in Cultural Historical Activity Theory (Cambridge University Press, 2008).

    Tünde Kovač Cerović, University of Belgrade

    obtained her PhD in educational psychology from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, where she had also obtained her first and second degrees. She now teaches at the Faculty of Psychology. From 2005 to 2007 she worked as Senior Advisor for REF, an international organization with Headquarters in Budapest, where she worked on comparative analysis of Roma education. In 2007-8 she held a position of Advisor for Education and Social Policy to the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister. She authored and coauthored many research projects and publications. Since July 2008 she has been holding the position of State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science.

    Jaan Valsiner, Clark University, Worcester, MA

    is a developmental cultural psychologist. He is the founding editor (1995) of the major international journal, Culture & Psychology (Sage) and Editor-in-Chief of Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Sciences (Springer, from 2007). Recipient of Alexander von Humboldt Prize (1995) for his interdisciplinary work on human development.

    Sanne Akkerman, Utrecht University

    Aleksandar Baucal, University of Belgrade

    is professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Belgrade. His main field of interest is the socio-cultural developmental psychology and studies of development of new competencies through symmetric (collaborative peer learning) and asymmetric (learning with adults) social interaction. Aleksandar Baucal's contribution is related to improvement of traditional pre-post test research design by integration with the Item Response Theory (IRT) and involvement of qualitative case studies. The enhanced pre-post test design enables researchers to measure developmental effects of collaborative learning and to understand different ways how new competencies can be developed through social interaction.

    Guida de Abreu, Oxford Brooks University

    is Professor in Cultural Psychology at Oxford Brookes University, UK. During the EARLI conference in Budapest in 2007, with Professor Ed Elbers, she founded SIG 21 on Learning and Teaching in Culturally Diverse Settings.Her main interests focus on theoretical and empirical work in cultural-developmental psychology. Using qualitative methodologies she investigates learning and identity development in culturally diverse settings, including the perspectives of children, young people, parents and teachers. She is particularly interested on examining experiences, meanings and representations of transitions between home and school cultures. She collaborates with researchers from many countries and this has resulted in publications such as Transitions between Contexts of Mathematical Practices (Abreu, Bishop, & Presmeg, 2002) and a special issue of the European Journal of Psychology of Education the social mediation of learning in multiethnic schools (edited by Abreu & Elbers, 2005).

    Alessio Surian, University of Padova

    is working as lecturer and researcher at the FISPPA (Filosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy, Applied Psychology) Department of the University of Padova (Italy) where he teaches interpersonal communication, group dynamics and educational planning. He is part of the Stede Master Mundus faculty. Since September 2011 is co-cordinator of EARLI SIG 21. He is an expert of the Intercultural Cities network supported by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. In Italy he has been investigating youth and teachers attitudes towards diversity in formal and nonformal education activities. In Argentina and Latin America he has been collaborating with the University of Buenos Aires in participatory action-research on housing rights.

    Tania Zittoun, University of Neuchâtel

    is professor of psychology and education at the University of Neuchâtel. A sociocultural developmental psychologist, she is interested in learning in a variety of situations - formal and informal - and all through the lifecourse. She is coordinator of SIG 10 since 2009. Her recent books include Transitions. Development through symbolic resources (2006) and, co-edited with S. Salvatore, Cultural psychology and psychoanalysis in dialogue (2011). She is an Associate Editor of Culture & Psychology.

    Nevena Buđevac, University of Belgrade

    Ph.D. student at the Department of Psychology and teaching assistant at the Teachers’ Training Faculty, University of Belgrade. Her main research interest concerns learning and developmental processes through peer interaction in school context.​​

    Nataša Cvijan, University of Belgrade

    Ph.D. student at Department of Psychology, University of Belgrade, and a research assistant in Teacher Education Center. Her fields of interest are education, qualitative research, coaching and psychotherapy. She participates in Tempus MASTS project, aimed at creating master program for subject teachers. She is also engaged in several other projects and teaching Psychology for teachers and Didactics of psychology at Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.

    Vitomir Jovanović, University of Belgrade

    Ph.D. student, teaching assistant and researcher at the Department of Psychology, University of Belgrade. His thesis is concerned with factors that influence progress in educational achievement tests. He is the author of several articles. His field of interests are educational and developmental psychology, educational measurement, qualitative analysis.

    Olga Marković, University of Belgrade

    graduated in psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. Her current position is Secretary of the Institute of Psychology at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. She took part in projects dealing with education (i.e. The Programme for International Student Assessment - PISA) and in organization of some local scientific meetings.

    Marko Milanović, University of Belgrade

    student at Department of Psychology, University of Belgrade. His main field of interest is research methodology and data analysis. He has worked as a consultant or researcher in many national and international organizations such as UNICEF, Red Cross, Transparency Serbia, Serbian Government. In the area of education the most recent research that he has worked on is Programme for International Student Assessment 2009 (PISA).

    Jelena Radišić, University of Belgrade

    Ph.D. student at Department of Psychology, University of Belgrade. She works in the field of educational psychology, exploring the teaching/learning process and everyday classroom practices; employing both quantitative and qualitative research methods in her work. Currently she is involved in several research projects in the educational field.
