PhD Annual Meeting

The Annual PhD Meeting is a flagship event of the Doctoral School in Life Sciences (DSLS). It brings together doctoral candidates from diverse disciplines to:

  • Present and exchange on their research projects,
  • Strengthen the internal DSLS community,
  • Develop transferable skills, particularly in communication,
  • Receive feedback from peers and experts in a supportive environment.

The event features scientific sessions, poster presentations, and a thematic workshop led by invited professionals.

Who Should Attend?

Attendance is mandatory for first-year PhD students or first-time participants!
All other DSLS PhD members are encouraged to join, whether presenting or simply attending.

Credits allocation

  • Organizing comittee : 1 credit (Category: Scientific activity)
  • Poster or video: 0.5 credit (Category: Scientific activity or Transferable skills)
  • 15-minute talk: 1 credit (Category: Scientific activity)

For first-time participants, one of the following is required:

  • Poster + 1-minute flash talk (1 slide, 3 minutes max)
  • 15-minute oral presentation (in person or online)
  • Alternative (remote) poster + flash talk presented online or 3-minute video presentation (e.g. fieldwork or research summary)

Abstract submission (max 250 words) is mandatory for all presenters and will be requested via a form.

Day 1: Scientific Presentations & Posters

  • Welcome & opening remarks
  • Oral presentations, flash talks & poster sessions
  • Coffee and lunch breaks
  • Evening social activity & apéro

Day 2: Transferable Skills Workshop

  • Thematic session led by an invited expert
    (e.g. science communication, career planning, media training)
  • Interactive training (theory + practice)

Committee Responsibilities

Dr. Sarah Miéville, DSLS Academic Coordinator, oversees the overall organization of the Annual PhD Meeting. This includes event‑wide coordination, communication with participants and speakers, venue and catering arrangements, technical and logistical support, as well as the management of the abstract submission system on Moodle. Thobile Dlamini is responsible for coordinating the poster sessions, managing the welcome desk, and providing on‑site support throughout the event. Mélanie Echernier contributes to the welcome desk, assists with the poster session, and supports general on‑site logistics. Magnus Onyiriagwu and Francesca Desmaria jointly handle the editing and formatting of the abstract booklet. In addition, Magnus supports the Moodle submission system, while Francesca leads the DSLS community survey to gather input on themes, workshop topics, and participant needs. Together, the committee ensures a smooth, well‑organized, and scientifically enriching Annual PhD Meeting.
