How to submit a proposal

The Swiss Sociological Association (SSA) currently invites two types of proposals for its 2019 Congress: plenary session and workshop proposals. SSA members and non-members of any nationality are encouraged to submit a proposal. We accept proposals in English, German, and French.

Plenary sessions and workshops are both panel discussions with a chair and a discussant (optional for workshops) that last approximately 90 minutes. The number of presenters at plenary sessions is fixed at three. The number of presenters at workshops may vary, but ideally revolves around 4 or 5. Twelve to fourteen workshops take place concurrently during workshop timeslots. The number of simultaneous plenary sessions is capped at five. Attendance therefore tends to be larger at plenary sessions.

The main difference between organizing workshops and plenary sessions is that plenary session organizers must provide the names of all presenters at the time of submission. Organizers must therefore confirm the availability of presenters before submitting their proposal, and plenary session proposals will be assessed on the basis of each presenter’s credentials as well as overall panel consistency and contribution to the Congress agenda.

By contrast, workshop organizers propose a topic and a call. If their proposal is accepted, they are responsible for distributing their workshop call, receiving and reviewing applications, and selecting participants. Workshop calls will also be posted on the Congress website and a list of all workshops will be circulated among SSA members.

See below for more information on how to submit proposals for plenary sessions and workshops.

For Workshops

Please submit your proposal, including workshop title, abstract (250 words), and call for papers (max. 500 words) as well as workshop organizer(s) affiliation and contact information by January 15, 2019 to: socio.congress2019@unine.ch. Decisions will be communicated no later than February 15, 2019 and you will be responsible for organizing the workshop. If your proposal is accepted, we will ask you to submit the program of the workshop containing all relevant information by May 15, 2019.

For Plenary sessions

Please submit your proposal, including plenary title and abstract (250 words), presentation titles and names of speakers as well as the plenary organizer(s) affiliation and contact information by January 15, 2019 to: socio.congress2019@unine.ch. A plenary session includes three presentations. Decisions will be communicated no later than February 15, 2019. If your proposal is accepted, we will ask you to submit the program of the plenary session containing all relevant information by March 15, 2019.

When submitting their proposal, plenary session organizers who intend to invite presenters from abroad may apply for funding to cover the presenter’s travel expenses and accommodation by noting the presenter’s name in their email and attaching her or his CV. If your plenary session proposal is accepted, you will receive an update on the status of your funding request by the end of May 2019. Expenses may be covered in full or in part depending on the availability of event funds.
