With its Master's degree programme, the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Neuchâtel offers advanced and in-depth training, in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy of the University of Fribourg, in the following fields:

  • systematic philosophy: metaphysics, philosophy of knowledge, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, philosophy of human sciences, moral philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of culture and aesthetics
  • history of philosophy: ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary philosophy.

The rich, extensive and diversified programme of the "philosophy" pillar of the University Master's degree in humanities is unique in Switzerland. It includes the collaboration of seven ordinary professors and numerous scientific collaborators from the Universities of Neuchâtel and Fribourg, as well as regularly invited external lecturers.

The programme offered at the University of Neuchâtel gives an important but not exclusive place to the major fields of systematic philosophy in the context of modern philosophy, mainly 17th and 18th century philosophy, with an openness always given to recent philosophical developments. It is in this spirit that the professors of philosophy at the University of Neuchâtel continue their research and regularly publish at an international level.

If this corresponds to your own priorities, you can therefore obtain specialized training in modern philosophy in Neuchâtel. But you also have the freedom to diversify your training as you wish by moving freely between the Universities of Neuchâtel and Fribourg.

The Institute of Philosophy of the University of Neuchâtel, by its size, promotes proximity between students and professors, developing direct and sustained contacts. The Department of Philosophy at the University of Fribourg offers the advantage of bilingualism.
