Integrated modeling of surface and subsurface flow and transport using HydroGeoSphere


This course provides an introduction to Integrated Surface and Subsurface Models (ISSHM) using the HydroGeoSphere (HGS) platform.  HGS is a three-dimensional control-volume finite element simulator which is designed to model the entire terrestrial portion of the hydrologic cycle. It uses a globally-implicit approach to simultaneously solve the 2D diffusive-wave equation for overland/surface water flow and the 3D form of Richards’ equation for variably saturated groundwater flow.


The course will present the basic flow and transport processes simulated by HGS and will describe the numerical solutions used in HGS. Some applications of HGS will also be presented. Hands-on sessions are also planned where students will be able to run HGS for a series of examples, ranging from simplified systems to more complex catchment-type systems.
