Ismaël is a PhD student at the Anthropology Institute. He holds a MA in public management and policy from the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration, University of Lausanne. He also spent two years at the Centre for Sustainability, University of Otago, New Zealand as a visiting PhD. His thesis is part of the SNF project “New directions in agri-environmental governance: Re-assembling food, knowledge and autonomy”.

Research

Agri-environmental governance is a framework describing the unfolding of institutions and policy processes that organize the relationship between food production and environmental objectives. It aims to shed light on the will to promote sustainable food production. Ismaël’s research focuses on public governance practices, particularly government responses to environmental issues, in New Zealand. The country combines three different factors of interest: Its economic dependence on agriculture through global exports; the environmental pressure resulting from this intensive production, especially non-point water pollution; and a particular policy setting in which farming is not subject to direct payments, unlike most OECD countries. In this context, Ismaël is working on the emergence of an environmental problem, its appropriation by local authorities and the answers they are bringing, by highlighting the mechanisms of consultation, consultation and compromise consubstantial to the development of a public policy.
