The workshop will most benefit leaners with an intermediate level of English, but may also be of use to elementary or more advanced students.

There are no special entry requirements except for the students’ level of English (see ‘Target audience’).

By the end of the course, successful students will be able to:

  • identify the different sounds of English (vowels, consonants and diphthongs)
  • recognise phonemic symbols and make (albeit occasional) use of phonetic transcription
  • identify word stress
  • demonstrate awareness of problem areas such as silent letters, minimal pairs, homophones and homographs, connected speech, etc.

Class work will focus on the sounds of English, phonemic symbols, elements of word stress, connected speech as well as a number of problem areas (including silent-letter words, minimal pairs, homonyms and homophones).

The workshop is divided into three sessions, which will take place on 13, 20 and 27 November, from 5:30pm-6:40pm.

Alongside class work, students will be required to do one end-of-course assignment.

The course material will be distributed in class.
