Advanced Bachelor’s students and Master’s students who have courses in English. Intermediate learners who need English for their studies.

There are no special entry requirements except for the students’ level of English. The course is aimed at students whose proficiency level is at least B2. If you are not sure of your level, you can check the evaluation forms on our page  “Enseignement.”

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • summarize a scientific argument and point of view.
  • comfortably discuss academic and specialised subjects ;
  • use the vocabulary included in the AWL (Academic Word List) – sublists 6 to 10

Flexi-cours: the course takes place every week for 45 minutes. Students are required to do autonomous work at the Espace Multimédia d’Auto-apprentissage (E.M.A.) for 10 hours during the semester.

Activities will cover both oral and written English, with an emphasis on oral communication. Each session will include a variety of exercises and speaking activities on the AWL, word families, collocations, synonyms and antonyms.

One in-class test at the end of the course covering the vocabulary included in the AWL (sublists 6 to 10). Participation to small group and class discussions and debates will be self-assessed throughout the whole semester using a precise table distributed at the beginning of classes. Students will be required to do a short presentation.

The course material is going to be distributed in class. Students are required to contribute CHF 5.- towards the cost of printing and photocopying.
