Research interests

Soil-dwelling insects can cause problematic damages to crops. In order to combat these pests, we plan to use polymer-based capsules as a novel and ecologically sound way to introduce biological control agents in soil. Polymer-based capsules can hold liquids and thus allow the encapsulation of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN). In order to target pests, the capsule may contain pest’s attractants and feeding stimulants to lure the pests by deviating them from the plant to the capsule. An important aspect of my thesis will also be to identify active constituents of exudates from green pea roots that put nematodes in a state of quiescence, which may then be included in the capsule to improve nematode conservation issues. The final aim of this project is the massive production of capsules in order to be applied on crop fields to reduce pest pressure. In order to study the effect of encapsulated EPN, we will focus on their effect on the western corn rootworm (WCR) (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) which is the most important pest of maize in the United States.
