Après une licence interfacultaire (Master) en ethnologie, sociologie et science politique, Matthieu Bolay a obtenu un doctorat (PhD) en sciences sociales pour une thèse intitulée:

"Gold Journeys: Expulsion-induced mobility and the making of artisanal mining spaces in West Africa. An ethnography of itinerant labour at the bottom of the gold supply chain."

Il est maintenant chercheur FNS Ambizione à l’Université de Berne et Professeur associé à la HETS Genève (HES-SO).
