Valley, Benoît

Benoît Valley obtained his first degree in 2002 at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland) in geology under the direction of Prof. Martin Burkhard. His diploma thesis topic was 3D modeling and restoration of non-cylindrical folds in the Jura Fold and Thrust belt. From 2002 to 2007, he worked in the Engineering Geology group of ETH Zürich. His first project was related to the characterization and modeling of a shallow landslide in soil. In 2007, he completed his PhD study on the thematic of fracture network and stress characterisation in the deep seated granite of Soultz-sous-Forêts (European geothermal project).

From 2007 to 2012, he was working as a researcher and a consultant in the Geomechanics Research Center of MIRARCO as well as developing R&D programs within CEMI, the Center for Excellence in Mining Innovation. In 2013, he obtained a position of Senior Researcher at the Geological Institute of ETH Zürich. His research interests are at the interface of structural geology and geomechanics, with the main focus on stress and fracturing characterisation, the relation of stresses and structures and the strength of rock and rock masses. In 2014, Benoît Valley has been appointed Assistant Professor at the Center for Hydrogeology and Geothermics (CHYN) of the University of Neuchâtel.
