Il n'existe probablement pas de manuel idéal en ethnologie. Aussi, pour acquérir une première vue générale des concepts et des problématiques de l'ethnologie, est-il recommandé de lire deux manuels d'inspiration différente (par exemple, un manuel contemporain et un autre plus ancien, un premier manuel organisé selon un plan thématique et un second qui présente l'ethnologie en fonction de son histoire, ou encore un manuel français et un manuel américain, etc.).

Ces deux lectures offriront ainsi l'occasion de mettre en pratique la démarche comparative qui est, précisément, une des principales caractéristiques de l'approche ethnologique des phénomènes sociaux et culturels.
