Summary

The participants will learn how to design and deliver an effective public presentation.

Besides acquiring techniques to plan a powerful presentation (structure, content, methods, etc.), the participants will also have an opportunity to practice their communication skills including their voice, posture, gestures and eye contact.

They will receive feedback from the teacher and the audience and will be able to individually review their presentations on video.

Precourse assignment

1. Reading of the Guide on Effective Presentations prepared by Prof. Marcel Lucien Goldschmid (Guide sent after registration).

2. Preparation of 2 short presentations (5 minutes each), free choice of topics, possibility to use PowerPoint, transparencies, and flip chart… PowerPoint presentations should be sent to Christiane Bobillier not later than Monday 23 September.

Content

Half day 1:

Introduction

  • Introduction of participants
  • Challenge and impact of public speaking
  • Course objectives and modalities 

Effective delivery

  • Characteristics of an effective speaker
  • Communication skills: Voice, position, gestures and eye contact
  • First presentations by the participants
  • 5 minute presentations recorded on video
  • Evaluation grid and audience feedback
  • Individual reviewing of video recording

Planning of presentations

  • Systems approach-Adaptation to audience
  • Objectives and structure of presentation
  • Presentation methods

Half day 2:

Second presentations by the participants

  • 5 minute presentations recorded on video with specific directed audience participation

Conclusions and evaluation of the course by the participants

Registration

  • This course is free and open to all Ph.D. students, however priority is given to "Interuniversity doctoral program in organismal biology" participants until 30 July 2013.
    Minimum number of participants: 8, maximum: 12.
  • The effective cost is approx. CHF 600.00 per person. Therefore a waiting list will be prepared to ensure that there are no empty seats.
