objectives

To improve participants' ability to give effective talks on a scientific topic in English.

content and pre-course assignment

 . work on building up a repertoire of expressions commonly used in talks and public presentations.
. receive feedback on their English (use of vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar).
. practise giving parts of short talks and handling questions, sometimes with video recordings.
. receive feedback on slides and a short talk on their research topic.

Pre-course assignment:
Participants will be asked to complete a short questionnaire and send an abstract or a summary of their research (1/2 - 1 page) by Monday 15 January 2007.

Evaluation: Full attendance, home preparation and active participation

Travel expenses: NCCR Ph.D. participants are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train (half-fare card, and 2nd class). Please send the original tickets (no copies, except for the general abonnement) to Dr. Christiane Bobillier.  No reimbursement for bus, taxi or car travel expenses will be paid.

This course is opened to all Ph.D. student, however priority is given to NCCR "Plants and their Environment" Graduate School participants. Postdocs and diploma students are welcome depending on availability.

Minimum number of participants: 6, maximum: 8. Course full. Graduate school participants can register on the waiting list.

This course is free, but the effective cost is approx. CHF 500.00 per person. Therefore a waiting list will be prepared to ensure that there are no empty seats.
