The CSCF has several purposes : - to gather every possible information on the Swiss fauna - to collaborate with the services of environmental protection, nature and landscape protection in order to develop a global concept for the protection of species and their habitats - to encourage and coordinate eco-faunistic research in Switzerland by launching new inventories and publishing distribution atlas and red data lists - to rationalize and standardize methods for collecting faunistic data at universities, nature conservancy services, entomological societies, natural history museums - to maintain and reinforce the existing connections between faunistic research in Switzerland and abroad in order to integrate our work in a wider zoogeographic context - to promote and participate in the writing and the distribution of basic documents on the Swiss fauna which should inable the non-specalized naturalists to recognize the animals they observe or capture (simplified determination keys, field books) |

The Swiss Center of Cartography of the Fauna (CSCF) is a private foundation which has been officially recognized on July 1st, 1990. The Center is situated in Neuchâtel. The founding members are the City of Neuchâtel, the University of Neuchâtel and Pro Natura (Swiss league of nature protection). Their contributions are as follows : City of Neuchâtel offers a furnished office, the University access to their electronic data system Sitel and Pro Natura pays a yearly financial contribution. Other financial means are provided by the Swiss Confederation through its federal department of forests, environment and landscape (OFEFP/BUWAL). The authorities of the CSCF are : The board of the foundation with 7 seats. Members are elected for 4 years and can be reelected. The board raises funds, rules and controls the scientific board, nominates the director and controls his activities, approves the annual report, the budget, the accounts and the programm submitted by the director and the scientific board. My duties : My main task at CSCF is to organize and carry out data analyses in general (GIS, statistics, relational database, Internet). The quick development of all these tools makes it important to keep a good computing strategy, which I am supposed to plan, lay out and use in as many projects as possible (SPACE). My field : I studied biology at the University of Geneva, and did my master and PhD thesis on aquatic plants in Lake Geneva at the Laboratoire d'Ecologie et de Biologie Aquatique. I got also a postgrad master in statistics from the University of Neuchâtel. I spent a year in New Zealand at Landcare Research to study fern distribution across the country. Since then, I went back several times to New Zealand in order to pursue my collaboration on the development of a modeling tool called GRASP. Please consult my list of publications. You can reach me : normally on weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm, but e-mail is safer by telephone : +41 (0)32 724 92 97 I can answer you : In French, English and Splus. My Italien and German are really rusty ! I like : I like windsurfing, skiing and mountain biking above all because it gives me this feeling of fighting more intensely with the natural elements. However, I appreciate also more contemplative hobbies like discovering beautiful landscapes and nature in general, especially when pristine and wild... Of course if you talk to me about New Zealand or about the painter Hundertwasser (posters) you've got my attention... I hate : People who complain without reacting, doing twice the same thing, walking back on the same track, ...having dinner alone !!! |

After a stay at the university of Zurich, I got my diploma in natural sciences at the "Università degli Studi" at Pavia with a study on the bumble bees of Monte Generoso. My next stop was Bellinzona, where I worked at the office for the protection of nature of the Canton Ticino. Then I was off to San Carlos (Nicaragua) where I participated in the developpement of a nature reserve. Very recently, I have landed at the Natural History Museum of Canton Ticino, where I work since March 2002 for the CSCF, especially for the agency Southern Alps. I oversee the projects of the CSCF in the area, I collect faunistic data and maintain the contact between naturalists through the exchange of information. My entomological preference goes to the Apidae and I participate in every meeting of the Aculeata-group in Zurich. But I am widening my knowledge to the dragonflies and the butterflies. You can reach me : in general on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 8.30 am and 6 pm. Museo Cantonale di Storia
