Survey
In December 2001, a survey (
The response was good with 60% of all surveys being returned (women 70%, men 52%). Overall, both genders showed similar characteristics and concerns: Among others, most PhD students and postdocs did expect conflicts between professional and private life, especially in terms of family planning, and believed in part-time work as one possible way to deal with these conflicts. The most noticeable difference between female and male respondents was a greater degree of uncertainty with respect to future career advancement among women. Indeed, more than one third of all women had no clear plans for their future career and women seemed to be a little bit less determined to reach higher academic levels or to go towards management. This aspect has to be addressed, as it could become a crucial factor in upcoming career decisions where often a high degree of determination is a necessity. Results ( MeasuresMeasures are planned to address the significant decline in the percentage of women at higher academic level. All PhD students, postdocs as well as senior researchers receive EO-related information through regular emails from the EO officer.
